Elk Espresso, Gold Coast, Australia

I have discovered that jet lag has a silver lining - well it does if you’re suffering on the Gold Coast! My recent trip to the “land down under” had me waking at 5 am with no hope of catching a few more much needed zzz’s. That silver lining ... watching stunning sunrises from Broadbeach followed by a much needed coffee at Elk Espresso. Those lucky enough to call the Gold Coast home are up bright and early for morning surf sessions or just making the most of those gloriously sunny days that they are blessed with year round.

Elk Espresso opens at 6am to cater for the early risers and it is by far my favourite cafe on the Gold Coast. I have developed my own rating system for cafes and it is based on four key factors: food, tea/coffee, ambiance and design. Elk Espresso has nailed them all! It is situated in a prime location facing towards the beachfront and is beautifully decorated with plenty of greenery giving the space a sense of wellness and relaxation. Bonus points awarded for their chill morning playlist which is perfect for easing you into the day ahead.

In my experience cafes usually excel at either food or coffee but rarely both. Elk Espresso is one of the rare exceptions. They take their coffee seriously and pride themselves on using quality blends and single origin beans from Single O, Floozy Coffee Roasters, Fat Poppy Roasters, Padre Coffee and Small Batch Roasting Co. to name a few. Full disclosure - the coffee rating comes second hand from my fiancé as I am more of a tea connoisseur than a coffee aficionado, but it is high praise as he is very particular when it comes to his flat white (as most Antipodeans are!). Tea lovers rejoice, Elk caters for us too offering everything from sencha to jasmine pearls and even some oolongs.

The food menu is seasonal and is a perfect mix of reliable classics and creative dishes. Everything we tasted was delicious but it is the presentation that sets Elk Espresso apart. Each dish, from the Black Forest Waffles to the classic eggs and avo on sourdough toast, is gram worthy and lovingly prepared.

It's a rave review from me and one that is well deserved. In a market that is oversaturated Elk Espresso is a stand out. If you find yourself on Broadbeach and unable to sleep at 6am, do yourself a favour and head on over to this gem of a cafe for some delicious food and coffee - you won't regret it!

If you need some extra convincing to climb out of bed at that hour of the morning ... if you're lucky you may catch an epic sunrise like this stunner captured by the fiancé on one of our early morning outings!
